Hybrid Animal Types and History
There are three different types of hybrid animals. Hybrid animals
can refer to the offspring of two animals that are not the same species. Some
examples of these types of hybrid animals would be Zonkeys (a cross between a
zebra and a donkey), and a Wolphin which is the cross between a bottlenose
dolphin and a false killer whale. Another type of hybrid animals is the offspring of two different
subspecies within a species (An example would be the offspring of an Amur Tiger
and a Bengal Tiger). The third type of hybrid animal is the offspring of a
single species crossing breeds or populations. Some hybrid animals are born in
nature, while others are produced through human manipulation.
Some common hybrid animals are mammal hybrids and reptile hybrids, but
hybrids can also occur between different species of plants or between different
species of insects.
The idea of hybrid animals dates back to over fifty years
ago. In California in the middle of the twentieth century fishermen often used
salamanders as bait, and the fishermen discovered a new species between the
native California Tiger salamanders and the Barred Tiger salamanders they often
used as bait. These two subspecies of salamanders mated and produced offspring
which were some of the first nature born hybrid animals known to humans.
